But there is one number that quietly decides whether your rig tracks straight in a crosswind or gets pushed across three lanes: the relationship between your tow vehicle's wheelbase and the trailer's length. Get this wrong and you can be perfectly legal and dangerously unstable at the same time.

The widely used 110/20 rule says a tow vehicle with a 110-inch wheelbase can comfortably handle about 20 feet of trailer, and every extra 4 inches of wheelbase buys you roughly 1 more foot of trailer length. It is not a rating or a law — it is a stability screen. Use it first, then verify weight, payload, and hitch limits with the real numbers.
Why Trailer Length Beats the Tow Rating
A tow rating tells you how much weight a vehicle can pull. It says nothing about how much side force it can resist. When a semi passes or a crosswind hits, the trailer acts as a long lever pivoting at the hitch ball. The longer the trailer, the longer that lever, and the harder it tries to rotate the rear of your tow vehicle.
Even a small yaw angle matters. A trailer that drifts just 6 degrees off center generates dramatically more sideways push at 35 feet than at 20 feet — and that force scales with the square of the speed. The 110/20 Rule, Explained
Wheelbase is the distance from the center of the front axle to the center of the rear axle. The rule of thumb, popularized across RV safety literature, works like this:
- Baseline: 110 inches of wheelbase → 20 feet of trailer.
- Increment: add ~1 foot of trailer for every 4 additional inches of wheelbase.
- Examples: 130 in → ~25 ft, 150 in → ~28–30 ft, 170 in → ~33 ft.
This is a planning guideline, not a hard limit. A trailer that exceeds the guideline deserves extra scrutiny on loaded weight, tongue weight, hitch setup, brakes, tires, speed, and weather — not an automatic "no." Manufacturer ratings, payload, axle ratings, and receiver ratings still set the absolute ceiling.

Wheelbase ranges are approximate. Check your exact wheelbase on the manufacturer spec sheet or the door-jamb label, and measure trailer body length from the coupler to the rear bumper — not the "campsite total" some brochures advertise.
The Second Number Everyone Ignores: Rear Overhang
Wheelbase is only half the picture. The other half is rear overhang— the distance from the rear axle to the hitch ball. The longer the overhang, the more mechanical advantage the trailer has to swing the tow vehicle's tail. Compare the overhang to the wheelbase as a percentage:

A typical pickup has about 40 to 46 inches of overhang on a 145-inch wheelbase — right in the acceptable 28–33% band. A compact SUV with a short wheelbase and a long hitch extension can easily push past 40%, which is a large penalty to stability.
How to Check Your Own Setup
- Find your wheelbase.Look it up in the owner's manual or on the door-jamb label, then apply the 110/20 rule to get a starting trailer-length ceiling.
- Measure your overhang. Distance from rear axle center to the hitch ball, divided by wheelbase. Keep it under about 33%.

- If sway starts, do not brake. Ease off the throttle, hold the wheel steady, and let the rig straighten before braking gently. Manually applying the trailer brakes alone can also pull the trailer straight.
